Lawrence County

Lawrence County takes its name from Capt. James Lawrence a heroic naval officer from the War of
1812 who coined
the phrase Don't give up the ship.

The county began settlement around the year 1797 by Pennsylvanians and Virginians of Dutch and Irish
ancestry.
